OpenAI certifications in 2026: Academy badges, OpenAI Certified and practitioner credentials
OpenAI uses three kinds of credentials: free Academy badges, OpenAI Certified courses and practitioner certifications. What each one proves, how to verify it.
Under the single word “certification”, OpenAI uses three credentials of very different value. OpenAI Academy badges reward free, self-paced courses. OpenAI Certified is a certification program announced in September 2025, delivered through Coursera and, for invited Enterprise and Edu workspaces, inside ChatGPT. Practitioner certifications attest the ability to qualify and deploy ChatGPT, Codex and the API for a customer.
When you need someone to deploy these tools in your organization, the practitioner certifications are the only family whose stated subject is qualifying and deploying for a customer. Each one can be checked on a public page in thirty seconds.
All facts below were checked on the public pages of OpenAI, Coursera, Credly and Accredible on 15 October 2026.
Key takeaways
- OpenAI lists fourteen free Academy courses, each closed by a quiz passed at 80%; OpenAI writes that the resulting badges “are not certifications”.
- The only badge on OpenAI’s Credly page is ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, earned on Coursera. The OpenAI Certified app inside ChatGPT is limited to invited Enterprise and Edu workspaces.
- Practitioner certifications come in Solutions and Deployment pairs: scoping an opportunity and running the rollout are certified separately.
- Academy badges and practitioner certifications share the same platform, Accredible: the title, the issuer and the expiry date tell them apart.
- The useful question for a buyer is who, on the project, holds which credential, with a verification link and dates that cover the engagement.
Three families under one word
| Family | Format | Verified on | What it attests |
|---|---|---|---|
| OpenAI Academy badges | Free self-paced course and quiz, any ChatGPT account | Accredible | One course completed and its quiz passed at 80% |
| OpenAI Certified | Course with a final assessment, on Coursera or in ChatGPT | Credly | Practical AI skills for a role, such as teaching |
| Practitioner certifications | Credential issued by OpenAI, expiry date one year after issue | Accredible | Qualifying or deploying an OpenAI solution for a customer |
The three share a vendor and a vocabulary. They do not share a level. A sales page that says “OpenAI certified” without naming the credential does not say which of the three is meant.
OpenAI Academy badges: free, useful, and “not certifications”
OpenAI Academy offers free, self-paced courses. According to the help center article on Academy courses, they are available worldwide to anyone with a ChatGPT account, with no workspace required. Courses are hosted on Gradual.
The article lists fourteen courses covering work use, building with AI, leading adoption and teaching. Estimated durations range from 30 minutes to 180 minutes per course.
- Assessment: 10 to 20 questions, drawn from a bank of 50 per course. A failed attempt can be retaken with a new random selection.
- Badge: issued on Accredible when the course is completed and the assessment passed at 80% or higher.
- Certificate of completion: awarded for completing every course of a pathway, Foundations, Codex or API.
OpenAI is explicit about their status: badges and certificates of completion “are not certifications and do not guarantee eligibility for a future certification”. They are a good way to train a team, not a way to assess a provider.
OpenAI Certified: Coursera, ETS and Credly
OpenAI announced its certifications on 4 September 2025, with a stated goal of certifying 10 million Americans by 2030. On 9 December 2025, it launched the first two courses:
- AI Foundations, delivered inside ChatGPT through pilot programs with employers and public sector bodies;
- ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, announced as “available today in Coursera”.
Coursera, ETS and Credly by Pearson were brought in for learning design, psychometric rigor and portable credentials. AI Foundations leads to a first credential; additional courses and a hands-on project lead to the full OpenAI Certification.
As of 15 October 2026, the teachers course on Coursera is open for enrollment: seven modules, about five hours. OpenAI’s Credly page lists a single badge, ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, earned by completing every module and scoring 80% or higher on the final assessment.
The restriction concerns the app inside ChatGPT. The OpenAI Certified app page states that it is “available only for ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces on an invite-only basis”. OpenAI also presents it as a plugin for ChatGPT aimed at team training.
OpenAI Certified measures how well a person uses AI in a role. It does not claim to measure the ability to deploy it in someone else’s organization.
How to get an OpenAI credential
For a person who wants to train and earn a credential, two public routes exist.
- OpenAI Academy, at academy.openai.com: sign in with a ChatGPT account, pick one of the fourteen courses, pass the assessment for a badge, or complete a pathway for a certificate of completion. Free.
- OpenAI Certified: the teachers course is on Coursera, and the badge arrives on Credly. Inside ChatGPT, the app requires an invited Enterprise or Edu workspace; OpenAI directs interested organizations to their account representative.
Practitioner certifications: ChatGPT, Codex, API, security
The third family is issued by OpenAI on Accredible. Each credential describes a specific ability, written either as Solutions (qualify and position an opportunity) or Deployment (take it to production). The descriptions below summarize each public Accredible page, consulted on 15 October 2026.
| Credential | What it attests, per the public Accredible page |
|---|---|
| ChatGPT Solutions Practitioner | Qualify, frame, prioritize and position a ChatGPT opportunity around real customer workflows, then hand it off |
| ChatGPT Deployment Practitioner | Turn a qualified ChatGPT opportunity into a governed, measurable rollout, from setup through adoption and scale |
| Codex Solutions Practitioner | Qualify and recommend a focused Codex evaluation around a customer’s software delivery workflow |
| Codex Deployment Practitioner | Select, govern, integrate and stage Codex workflows across the software development lifecycle |
| API Deployment Practitioner | Design, secure, test and assess production readiness of API solutions, including retrieval and agentic patterns |
| OpenAI Consultative Solutions Practitioner | Qualify AI opportunities, shape priority use cases and value hypotheses, map solution paths |
| OpenAI Cyber Solutions Practitioner | Position, qualify and safely route authorized defensive security opportunities |
| OpenAI Cyber Deployment Practitioner | Scope, govern and evaluate bounded Codex Security workflows for authorized defensive work |
| OpenAI Technical Practitioner | Route, design and validate OpenAI solutions across architecture, security, governance and data |
The Solutions and Deployment pairs matter for a buyer. Qualifying a Codex project and rolling it out across a development team are two distinct skills, and OpenAI certifies them separately.
How to verify a holder
A certificate PDF can be edited and a LinkedIn line can be typed by anyone. A public verification page is served by the credentialing platform. Ask for the link, then read the page.
Practitioner certifications on Accredible
Each page shows the holder’s name, the exact title of the credential, a short description, the skills covered, the issuer with a mention that it is a verified issuer, the issue date and the expiry date. The verification pages show an expiry date one year after issue: a credential issued in September 2026 shows an expiry date in September 2027.
Telling an Academy badge from a practitioner certification
Academy badges are also issued on Accredible, so the platform alone does not settle the question. Four signs do:
- the title: an Academy badge carries a course name, such as AI Foundations, while a practitioner certification ends in “Practitioner”;
- the Academy mention: the example badge in OpenAI’s help center reads “OpenAI Academy” around the course name;
- the issuer displayed on the page, to compare with the credential being claimed;
- the expiry date: practitioner pages show one, and OpenAI’s help article on Academy badges does not mention any.
OpenAI Certified on Credly
An OpenAI Certified badge lives on Credly. The badge page states “Issued by OpenAI”, describes what earners can do and lists the earning criteria. Ask the holder for their personal Credly link and check the name, the badge title and the issue date.
What a buyer should ask a provider who says they are certified
The questions depend on the size of the project.
For a pilot or a single team:
- Who will do the work, and which exact credential does that person hold?
- Where are the verification links, Accredible or Credly?
- Do the dates on those pages cover the engagement?
For an organization-wide rollout:
- Does someone on the project hold the Deployment credential for the product, ChatGPT Deployment or Codex Deployment, and someone the Solutions credential for the scoping phase?
- Who holds API Deployment if the project includes development on the API, or the Cyber credentials if it touches security?
- Which comparable deployments can the provider describe, and can you speak to one of those customers?
A certification belongs to a named person, not to a company. A provider who answers these questions with names, links and dates has given you what you need to check.
How it compares with Anthropic’s Claude certifications
Anthropic runs a different model. Its Claude certifications are proctored exams taken through Pearson VUE, at a test center or online, and badges are verified on Credly. The highest level, the Claude Certified Architect Professional, assesses enterprise-scale architecture, integration and governance.
The two systems answer different questions. The Anthropic exam measures depth on one model family; the OpenAI practitioner certifications attest the ability to qualify and deploy specific OpenAI products for a customer. Our guide to the Claude Certified Architect details the Anthropic levels.
Our founder’s certifications
Ulysse Trin, founder of Colombani.ai, holds the Claude Certified Architect Professional issued by Anthropic (verify on Credly) and nine practitioner certifications issued by OpenAI, including:
- ChatGPT Deployment Practitioner;
- ChatGPT Solutions Practitioner;
- Codex Solutions Practitioner;
- Codex Deployment Practitioner.
Each one can be verified online. The full list of his credentials, with what each one covers, is on our certifications page.
Ulysse Trin designs and delivers our training programs on OpenAI tools: ChatGPT training for decision makers and business teams, and Codex training for teams working on files, folders or code. For the product itself, our ChatGPT Business guide covers plans, agents and data.

Frequently asked questions
Is there an official OpenAI certification?
Yes. OpenAI announced its certification program, OpenAI Certified, on 4 September 2025, and launched its first two courses on 9 December 2025: AI Foundations, inside ChatGPT through pilot programs, and ChatGPT Foundations for Teachers, on Coursera. Credentials are issued through Credly. The OpenAI Certified app inside ChatGPT is, as of 15 October 2026, limited to invited ChatGPT Enterprise and Edu workspaces. Separately, OpenAI Academy badges reward free courses and are not certifications, while practitioner certifications attest the ability to qualify and deploy OpenAI products for a customer.
Are OpenAI Academy courses free, do they give a certification?
The courses are free and open to anyone with a ChatGPT account. Each one ends with an assessment of 10 to 20 questions drawn from a bank of 50, and a score of 80% or higher earns a badge on Accredible. Completing a full pathway (Foundations, Codex or API) earns a certificate of completion. OpenAI's help center states that neither the badges nor the certificates of completion are certifications.
What is the ChatGPT Solutions Practitioner?
It is a practitioner certification issued by OpenAI. According to its public Accredible page, it recognizes the judgment needed to qualify, frame, prioritize and position a ChatGPT opportunity around a customer's real workflows, then hand it off to deployment. The skills listed include opportunity qualification, workflow design, value framing and handoff planning.
What is the Codex Deployment Practitioner?
It is a practitioner certification issued by OpenAI. Its public Accredible page describes the judgment needed to select, govern, integrate and stage Codex workflows across the software development lifecycle. The skills listed are operating models, workflow integration, risk management, human review, deployment governance and adoption planning.
How long are OpenAI practitioner certifications valid?
The public verification pages show an expiry date one year after the issue date: on the pages consulted on 15 October 2026, a credential issued on 20 September 2026 shows an expiry date of 20 September 2027. Check that date against the dates of your project.
How do I verify someone's OpenAI certification?
Ask for the public verification link of each credential. Academy badges and practitioner certifications are hosted on Accredible; the page shows the holder's name, the exact title, the issuer and the issue date, and practitioner pages also show an expiry date. OpenAI Certified badges are hosted on Credly, where the badge page states that it is issued by OpenAI and lists its earning criteria. A PDF or a LinkedIn line alone proves nothing.
OpenAI vs Anthropic certifications: which matters when choosing a consulting firm?
They answer different questions. The Claude Certified Architect Professional, issued by Anthropic, is a proctored exam taken through Pearson VUE and verified on Credly: it measures depth on enterprise-scale Claude architecture. OpenAI practitioner certifications attest the ability to qualify and deploy ChatGPT, Codex or the API for a customer. A trainer who holds both can compare the two families of tools on your own use case; verify each credential on its own page.
